How do I deal with incontinence?

My father has recently been soiling himself in his bed. How can I get the smell out and prevent future accidents?

Many helpful devices are available, including incontinence diapers and underwear, and underpads for the mattress. To prevent overnight incontinence, ask your father to avoid drinking alcohol or coffee late in the day and to avoid drinking liquids close to bedtime. After investigating the cause, your father’s doctor can also recommend additional prevention strategies.

Through the government-funded home care program, your father may be eligible for a visit from a continence advisor, who is specially trained to assess incontinence and who can make treatment recommendations. Call your local home care department for more information.
